What type of Legacy will you leave? ...What do you want to be remembered for?

Every Action Counts:

Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "I made a difference to that one!"

The first time I remember hearing this story was at sleep away camp.  There, our director would tell us a story each week to give us hope or inspiration and challenge us to make a difference. This story accomplishes that lesson.  The man tries his best to save as many starfish as he can, even though he knows that there is no way he can save all of them.  But the ones that he does help, they are given a second chance at life. Every little action counts.  Every small step can help the world and make a greater impact. It’s like a ripple effect. One small drop in the ocean makes larger and larger rings. We also learn that we have to take action.  We cannot just want the “starfish” to be saved, and we cannot give up, just because we can’t save all the starfish.  We can’t be bystanders.  We must work hard to help the world, make a difference, and leave a legacy.

Leave Your Impact:
Fingerprints

A fingerprint is an impression of the friction ridges of a finger, in other words, a mark that you leave behind.  No two fingerprints are exactly alike, even if they are recorded immediately after each other. There are three different types of fingerprints: a latent fingerprint, a patent fingerprint and a plastic fingerprint. A latent fingerprint is an accidental impression that is, most of the time, invisible; it is an impact that is made, even though you can’t see it from the naked eye. A patent fingerprint is one where the print is clearly visible, but its origin is unknown. A plastic print is an impression left purposely in a material that will forever preserve the mark. So leave your own impression. Whether it be invisible, accidental, or purposely, leave behind your fingerprints upon this earth; make a difference.
